Scott King 

is in his fifteenth year as Director of Bands at Starr’s Mill High School and twenty-ninth year of teaching. Since coming to Starr’s Mill, the Wind Ensemble has been invited and performed at numerous national, regional, and state events, including Bands of America Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. The Panther Pride Marching Band haswon many grand championships (.333 average), including an undefeated season in 2008. Mr. King is the drill designer and arranger/composer for the Panther Pride. The Swingin’ Starrs Jazz Band has been invited and performed at the GMEA convention. Starr’s Mill HS is the first school band program in GA history to be invited to perform with its wind ensemble and jazz band any year at the GMEA convention. SMHS Band students have been consistently competitive in GA All-State events, including five straight years in the top 4 of participants with one year having the most in the entire state of Georgia.

Mr. King holds degrees from Jacksonville State University, VanderCook College of Music (4.0 GPA) and Auburn University (4.0 GPA). He is a nine-time recipient of the National Band Association’s “Citation of Excellence” award, the 2005 “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” award, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, 2008-2011 US Army All-American Bowl honorary member, and honorary citizen of St. Petersburg, FL. Mr. King is a former member and instructor of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. He is a professional member of MENC, GMEA, and NBA. Mr. King lives in Senoia with wife, Shannon, and daughter, Alexis.

Bert Groover

Assistant Director of Bands

Bert Groover is in his second year as the Assistant Band Director at Starr’s Mill and 11 th year of teaching both publicly and privately. He is also currently in his fourth year as Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Clayton State University. He is the percussion arranger for the Panther Pride marching percussion section. The Panther Pride marching percussion section has consistently earned Superior ratings at competition and this past season won high percussion for two straight weekends of competition. Private students of Mr. Groover have consistently earned positions in District, State and National Honors ensembles.

Previously Mr. Groover has taught at schools in Georgia, Alabama, and Utah where the ensembles under his direction consistently earned Superior ratings at both marching competitions and concert evaluations. While teaching at Harris County high school in Georgia, the marching band was invited to attend the festivities at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, TX.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Percussion Performance from Columbus State University as well as Bachelor’s Degrees in both Music Education and Music Performance, also from Columbus State University.

Mr. Groover maintains an active performing schedule as well playing with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra as the Assistant Principal Percussionist and various locations around the metro Atlanta area. He is frequently heard as the percussionist at the Legacy Theatre in Tyrone, GA for their musical theatre productions. He is a professional member of National Association of Music Educators, Percussive Arts Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Vic Firth Corporation.

Mr. Groover lives in Peachtree City with his wonderfully supportive wife Casie, two children Mayson and Marian, and their Australian Kelpie Max.

Rodney Bailey

Colorguard Instructor

Mr. Bailey has been the colorguard choreographer/designer for Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners Colorguard for the past 21 years.  During this time he has instructed several Drumcorps color guards, High School colorguards and Independent winterguards across the country.  Mr. Bailey is in his 12th year as an English Professor at Jacksonville State University and was the 2016 JSU Faculty Member of the Year.
